Organ Gangs Force Poor to Sell Kidneys for Desperate Israelis

StratRisks

...Yafimau is one of the faceless and neglected victims in a sprawling global black market in organs — where brokers use deception, violence and coercion to buy kidneys from impoverished people, mainly in underdeveloped countries, and then sell them to critically ill patients in more-affluent nations.

The middlemen form alliances with doctors in leading hospitals who do these transplants for a fee, no questions asked.

Organ trafficking is on the rise, as desperate people seek transplants in a world that doesn’t have enough donors. About 5,000 people sell organs on the black market each year, according to Francis Delmonico, an adviser on transplants to the World Health Organization.

It’s against the law to buy or sell an organ in every country except Iran, says Delmonico, who is president-elect of the Montreal-basedTransplantation Society, which lobbies governments to crack down on illicit procedures...[Full Article]

Death Panels in ObamaCare? How About RATIONING Organ Transplants?

DRScoundrels

All during the debates on ObamaCare, conservatives speculated (and were subsequently ridiculed) about what we saw as an obviously apparent necessity for the move to rationed health care. ‘No, No, No’ cried those liberals who forced this bill down our throats. ‘There won’t be any rationing of health care! And there certainly won’t be any death panels, you silly, stupid rednecked conservatives and Sarah Palin’. And they said, ‘Pay no attention to what has happened in every OTHER country that has instituted socialized health care. That won’t happen HERE. Wanna know why? Because WE are going to run it. And we will run it RIGHT.’

No matter how many times a conservative tried to show with logic, facts and evidence how it was impossible to enact this massive government-run health care ‘solution’ without rationing of some kind, we were run over, insulted and pushed aside. Of course that is because, as we’ve discussed before, liberals and progressives cannot abide facts. It is anathema to their physiological make up. Facts don’t jibe with knee jerk, emotional reactions.

So. Imagine my chagrin, but lack of surprise when I read in the washingtonpost.com and CNSNews.com today about the revamping of the organ donor program for kidneys...

Colorado Bill Would Make Citizens Organ Donors by DEFAULT

Bill would make Coloradans organ donors by default

DENVER (AP) — Some Colorado lawmakers say their state should be the first one where people become organ donors by default, even though other states' efforts have been halted by worries about making such a personal decision automatic.

Colorado's proposal, introduced in the Legislature last week, would change the process for renewing driver's licenses and ID cards so applicants are assumed to be organ and tissue donors unless they initial a statement that says they want to opt out...

Kosovo physicians accused of illegal organs removal racket

Medicus clinic linked in Council of Europe report to alleged Kosovo Liberation Army organ harvesting atrocities

The story of how Kosovo hosted an illegal market in human organs began to unfold today in a district court in the capital, Pristina. As armed special forces stood outside, the court heard how desperate Russians, Moldovans, Kazakhs and Turks were lured into the capital "with the false promise of payments" for their kidneys.

EU prosecutor Jonathan Ratel told the court the organs had been illegally removed from victims and transplanted into wealthy recipients in the clinic, known as Medicus. Those who paid up to €90,000 (£76,400) for the black-market kidneys included patients from Canada, Germany, Poland and Israel, Ratel said.

Huddled in the centre of the room, in overcoats, were seven defendants alleged to have played some role in the racket. Among them were some of Kosovo's most respected physicians, including a former permanent secretary of health who is accused of abusing office to grant Medicus a false licence, and Dr Lutfi Dervishi, a urologist at the university hospital alleged to have set up the operation.

Two of their co-accused are fugitives wanted by Interpol: Moshe Harel, an Israeli said to have matched donors with recipients, and Yusuf Sonmez, perhaps the world's most renowned organ trafficker...

Kosovo PM is head of human organ and arms ring, Council of Europe reports

Two-year inquiry accuses Albanian 'mafia-like' crime network of killing Serb prisoners for their kidneys

Kosovo's prime minister is the head of a "mafia-like" Albanian group responsible for smuggling weapons, drugs and human organs through eastern Europe, according to a Council of Europe inquiry report on organised crime.

Hashim Thaçi is identified as the boss of a network that began operating criminal rackets in the runup to the 1998-99 Kosovo war, and has held powerful sway over the country's government since.

The report of the two-year inquiry, which cites FBI and other intelligence sources, has been obtained by the Guardian. It names Thaçi as having over the last decade exerted "violent control" over the heroin trade. Figures from Thaçi's inner circle are also accused of taking captives across the border into Albania after the war, where a number of Serbs are said to have been murdered for their kidneys, which were sold on the black market...

Organ Wagons To Make House Calls

MYFOXNY.COM - It might sound a little disturbing to some people but a new pilot program will attempt to recover kidneys from people who die at home in Manhattan.

A team of organ specialists will have about 20-minutes after a cardiac-arrest patient is declared dead to arrive at the home, check a donor registry, determine medical eligibility, obtain a family member's consent and get the person into a specialized ambulance.

A special team will monitor 9-1-1 calls about people in danger of dying and they will travel directly to a person's home without being summoned.

The program is being launched Wednesday. It could eventually lead to thousands more organs donated each year. But the five-month trial, a collaboration between Bellevue Hospital and New York City's police and fire departments, could be declared a success without a single organ being recovered, organizers say...

Seven Charged in Kosovo Organ-Trafficking Ring

PRAGUE — At least seven people have been charged with participating in an international organ-trafficking network based in Kosovo that sold kidneys and other organs from impoverished victims for up to $200,000 to patients from as far away as Israel and Canada, police and senior European Union officials said Monday.

According to the indictment, the traffickers lured people from slums in Istanbul, Moscow, Moldova and Kazakhstan with promises of up to $20,000 for their organs. Law enforcement officials say many never received a cent. The operations were performed at a private clinic in a run-down neighborhood on the outskirts of Pristina, the Kosovar capital.

While the ring was first discovered two years ago, the global scale of the network and its victims is only now becoming clear...

How Sellafield 'mutilated' its workers' bodies

Organs and bones were illegally harvested from the bodies of dead nuclear industry workers at Sellafield without their consent over a period of 30 years, an inquiry found yesterday.

The relatives of 64 staff, many of whom only discovered their loved ones had been stripped of livers, tongues and even legs decades after they were buried, said the inquiry's findings proved the existence of an "old boys' club" among pathologists, coroners and scientists around Sellafield prior to 1992 which prioritised the needs of the nuclear industry above those of grieving family members...

Israeli organ traffickers bring business to RP

MANILA, Philippines – In May this year, thorough surveillance and investigation led to the arrest and indictment of six suspected members of an organ trafficking ring in Israel that included a retired military general.

The indictment included various instances of “organ harvesting” from donors in exchange for money in shekels, which was often not given in full.

The Israeli prosecutor handling the case, Bassam Kandaleft, described the case as a “shameful phenomenon” happening in their country similar to “modern [day] slavery.”

“The defendants treated the victims of trafficking as if they are immovable containers with organs, which can be removed and sold,” Kandaleft said in a copy of the Indictment e-mailed to this writer.

What has the Philippines got to do with the Israeli organ trafficking case?

As many as 12 transplants facilitated by this syndicate were performed in the country, using fraudulent documentation that were made to appear legal in order to pursue the procedure on the kidney patient and the donor, Kandaleft said.

The documents are prepared in Israel, complete with certification from the embassy that the patient and donor are related. Flights are arranged, usually via Hong Kong, then to the Philippines. And here, the traffickers know which hospital to go, which medical personnel and doctors to talk to complete the transaction. A week after the operation, the patient and the donor are sent back to Israel.

In the Philippines as in other countries, except Iran, the law forbids the buying and selling of human body parts. But people who are ill are prepared to pay huge sums of money for a second chance on life. In the same breadth, equally desperate people driven by poverty are forced to sell their kidney to feed their families.

Into this organ trade have encroached individual brokers or organized syndicates, prepared to dupe people into giving up a kidney, often for a measly amount...

South African & Israeli Organ Trafficking Syndicate

Israeli-linked organ dealers busted

PressTV.ir

South Africa's biggest healthcare company Netcare has been implicated in an illegal kidney transplant plot.

The biggest health care firm in South Africa has been charged with cooperating with an Israeli-linked organ trafficking syndicate.

The South African government said that the head of the Netcare company and a director of the St. Augustine's Hospital in Durban, Richard Friedland, had been aware of illegal kidney trade at the hospital, but "nevertheless permitted these operations" to take place, South African daily The Times reported on Wednesday.

The police said that wealthy Israelis paid organ dealers between 2001 and 2003, the year when the ring was exposed, the German Press Agency (DPA) reported.

"Israeli citizens in need of kidney transplants would be brought to South Africa for transplants at St. Augustine's Hospital," read the charge sheet.

"They paid kidney suppliers for these operations. [The kidneys] were initially sourced from Israeli citizens, but later Romanian and Brazilian citizens were recruited as their kidneys were obtainable at a much lower cost than those of the Israeli suppliers," it added.

An Israeli middleman, named Ilan Perry, received between USD 97,676 and USD 118,607 to arrange for the operations.

This is while, those who provided the kidneys were paid approximately between USD 6,000 and USD 20,000.

Five notable South African physicians, working in Durban have also been charged in the illegal organ-trafficking case.

The report also said that Netcare is being charged with setting up the syndicate with the assistance of prominent kidney specialist Jeffrey Kallmeyer and Perry.

The report comes as earlier last year, another report surfaced about an Israeli plot to kidnap children and harvest their organs.

According to the report, some 25,000 Ukrainian children had been brought into Israel over the past two years to be used by Israeli medical centers for their "spare parts."

The Israeli military is also accused of stealing the organs of Palestinian prisoners.

China Organ Trafficking Trial Exposes Grisly Trade

A Beijing court is prosecuting a man for illegal organ trafficking, local media reported, putting the spotlight on a grisly black market in body parts in a country where demand for transplants far outstrips supply.

Half a liver

can be bought for 45,000 yuan ($6,590), while an entire transplant including operation and recovery costs, can be completed for 150,000 yuan, according to a defendant from another organ trafficking trial prosecuted at the same court last month.

China in 2007 banned organ transplants from living donors, except spouses, blood relatives and step or adopted family members, but only launched a national system to coordinate donation after death last year.

Its efficiency has yet to be proved. Nearly 1.5 million people in China need organ transplants each year, but only 10,000 can get one, according to the Health Ministry...

China's hidden policy of executing prisoners of the forbidden quasi-Buddhist group Falun Gong and harvesting their organs for worldwide sale has been expanded to include Tibetans, "house church" Christians and Muslim Uighurs, human rights activists said Monday.

In a news conference on Capitol Hill, several speakers, including attorney David Matas of B'nai Brith Canada and Ethan Gutmann of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, said their investigations have unearthed a grisly trade in which an estimated 9,000 members of Falun Gong have been executed for their corneas, lungs, livers, kidneys and skins...

Five Israelis Charged With Organ Harvesting

Ring 'exploited desperate condition of sick people', say Israel police

Israel has charged five of its citizens, including a retired army general, with operating a nationwide organ trafficking ring that ensnared dozens of potential victims. The charges include human trafficking for the purpose of organ harvesting and money laundering.

The indictment says that the ring exploited the desperate condition of sick people and called it a "form of modern slavery." The traffickers allegedly offered up to $100,000 per kidney but in at least two cases did not pay the donors, who were sought through advertisements and then flown from Israel to Europe, South America or Southeast Asia, where the organs were extracted in illegal procedures. Israeli law bans organ sales...

Focus on Israel: Harvesting Haitian Organs

On January 15, Haaretz reported that:

“The Israel Defense Forces’ aid mission to Haiti left Israel overnight (January 14) with equipment for setting up an emergency field hospital. Around 220 soldiers and officers (were) in the delegation, including 120 medical staff (to) operate the hospital in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.”

According to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it includes “40 doctors, 25 nurses, paramedics, a pharmacy, a children’s ward, a radiology department, an intensive care unit, an internal department and a maternity ward (able to) treat approximately 500 patients each day,” including in two surgery rooms.

On January 20, Lebanon’s Al-Manar TV reported on the mission, citing a damning You Tube video posted by an American named T. West from a group called AfriSynergy Productions.

“The video presents something to think about while exploiting the horrible tragedy that has befallen Haiti where Israeli occupation soldiers are engaged in organ trafficking.”

Israel faced these charges before. In November 2009, Alison Weir’s article in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs headlined, “Israeli Organ Trafficking and Theft: From Moldova to Palestine.” She cited an August Donald Bostrom article in Sweden’s Aftonbladet suggesting that Israel illicitly removes body parts, including from Palestinians..
