U.S. consumers face "serious" inflation in the months ahead for clothing, food and other products, the head of Wal-Mart's U.S. operations warned Wednesday.
The world's largest retailer is working with suppliers to minimize the effect of cost increases and believes its low-cost business model will position it better than its competitors.
Still, inflation is "going to be serious," Wal-Mart U.S. CEO Bill Simon said during a meeting with USA TODAY's editorial board. "We're seeing cost increases starting to come through at a pretty rapid rate."...[Full Article]

Walmart is going after the tween (ages 8-12) market (and their parents' wallets) with the new GeoGirl beauty line. That 8-year-olds need lipstick is another debate, but this line will offer colorful cosmetics and "mother approved" makeup products. According to a recent article in Women's Wear Daily, the formulas are designed for young skin and have natural ingredients like white willow bark to exfoliate, chamomile, lavender and calendula to calm and antioxiodants. (Sounds a little much for a tweener, but I not a parent to one.)...

Jimmy and Eric hit up Walmart to interview customers about Walmart’s new program with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called, “If You See Something, Say Something.” Walmart is displaying a video message from the government at checkout stands in select Walmarts, asking customers to watch each other and report suspicious activity.

Smile! you’re on DHS-Wal-Mart Spy TV! The latest clampdown on American citizens from Janet Napolitano is sure to spark a backlash. Do any readers feel safer? I thought so.
HOW LOW WILL THEY GO?
What genius in Bentonville, Arkansas came up with the idea to offer free DHS spy cam photos with the Everyday Low Prices? Not to worry: after being fired, the person responsible can likely get a job at DHS or even Club Gitmo.
As for DHS, they’re becoming as noxious as the bureaucrats in 1930s Germany: remember, they were concerned with “security.”
Because when you leave the Southern border open, Mirandize foreign nationals and engage in other non-serious behavior, the only tactic left is apparently criminalizing the 300 million suspects who live in the USA.
“Contact law enforcement to report suspicious activity?”
How about there’s a freaking spy cam recording me buying a CD and some Pepsi?
Is that suspicious enough?
We concur 100% with Dana Loesch’s assessment:
“So while standing in line with your inflatable lawn Santa, tampons, dog food, and waiting for your tires to be rotated, you’ll be treated to a freakish video of Napolitano doing anything but actually stopping terrorism, like securing the borders (9/11 began as an immigration issue with the hijackers here on expired visas), paying closer attention to the FBI watch list, and implementing effective security protocols at airports instead of get-lucky random searching.”
This is very bad news: we always enjoyed shopping at Wal-Mart; now it will be almost impossible to check out while trying to simultaneously making rude hand gestures at the DHS Spy Cams.
Which brings us to a pertinent question.
Just who are readers beginning to fear more: the terrorists or the Department of Homeland Security?
Napolitano is aptly nicknamed “Big Sis.”
Maybe because everything else she’s called can’t be reprinted in a family publication.
First, the public “submit to our groping or naked scans” TSA scam. Now, Spy Cams at Wal-Mart.
But, as bad as this latest action is, it’s likely not the last nor the the worse. It’s suspected that there will be much worse done in the name of “security.”
Where does it end? Who knows? but once you can justify these types of actions with a straight face, you can justify a lot more police state tactics–and the smart money betting that they will try.
As for Wal-Mart?
No matter how low the Everyday Prices go, you can’t put a Price on being spied on by the United States government in a in the checkout line, so–so long!

Walmart Is Next
The first stages of the campaign in airports and transit stations have already been rolled out. Within the coming weeks, more than 600 Walmart stores in 27 states will begin playing video messages at the checkout stations from Secretary Janet Napolitano–or Big Sis, as she is referred to in some circles–aimed at encouraging Americans to play an active role in ensuring the safety and security of our nation. Conveniently, nowhere in the short PSA is “suspicious activity” actually defined, leaving it up to average Americans like you and me and your next-door neighbor to determine what kind of behavior should be reported to the government (or Walmart manager). What’s more, if you do get reported by a clerk or neighbor or ex-boyfriend, you’ll be entered into a permanent suspect file, whether or not you’re actually guilty of any wrongdoing.
Security Video
On cue, the Department of Homeland Security is rolling out a security video starring DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano that will be played on a constant loop at checkout counters at hundreds of Walmarts around the country. Napolitano tells Walmart shoppers to inform the police or a Walmart manger if they see something suspicious “in the parking lot or in the store.
What Should Be Reported
What sort of suspicious activity should be reported? It’s not entirely clear. Oklahoma Watchdog has put in interview requests via email and telephone to both Walmart’s corporate office in Bentonville, Ark. and to DHS’s media center in Washington.
Peddling Paranoia
The government seems to delight in peddling paranoia, especially since 9/11. However, with this latest campaign to turn Walmart shoppers into domestic spies, their tactics have taken a sinister turn.

WASHINGTON -- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced the expansion of the Department’s national “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign to hundreds of Walmart stores across the country—launching a new partnership between DHS and Walmart to help the American public play an active role in ensuring the safety and security of our nation.
“Homeland security starts with hometown security, and each of us plays a critical role in keeping our country and communities safe,” said Secretary Napolitano. “I applaud Walmart for joining the ‘If You See Something, Say Something’ campaign. This partnership will help millions of shoppers across the nation identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to law enforcement authorities.”
The “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign—originally implemented by New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and funded, in part, by $13 million from DHS’ Transit Security Grant Program—is a simple and effective program to engage the public and key frontline employees to identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to the proper transportation and law enforcement authorities.
More than 230 Walmart stores nationwide launched the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign today, with a total of 588 Walmart stores in 27 states joining in the coming weeks. A short video message, available here, will play at select checkout locations to remind shoppers to contact local law enforcement to report suspicious activity.
Over the past five months, DHS has worked with its federal, state, local and private sector partners, as well as the Department of Justice, to expand the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign and Nationwide SAR Initiative to communities throughout the country—including the recent state-wide expansions of the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign across Minnesota and New Jersey. Partners include the Mall of America, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Amtrak, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, sports and general aviation industries, and state and local fusion centers across the country.
In the coming months, the Department will continue to expand the “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign nationally with public education materials and outreach tools designed to help America’s businesses, communities and citizens remain vigilant and play an active role in keeping the county safe.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to roll out sophisticated electronic ID tags to track individual pairs of jeans and underwear, the first step in a system that advocates say better controls inventory but some critics say raises privacy concerns.
Starting next month, the retailer will place removable "smart tags" on individual garments that can be read by a hand-held scanner. Wal-Mart workers will be able to quickly learn, for instance, which size of Wrangler jeans is missing, with the aim of ensuring shelves are optimally stocked and inventory tightly watched. By Ed Smith's math, the CEO of Walmart earns more in an hour than his employees will earn in a year.
Alderman: Walmart CEO earns more in 1 hour than workers earn in a year.
Smith, an alderman in Chicago, presented posters at a city council meeting showing that Walmart CEO Michael Duke's $35 million salary, when converted to an hourly wage, worked out to $16,826.92. By comparison, at a Walmart store planned for the Windy City's Pullman neighborhood, new employees to be paid $8.75 an hour would gross $13,650 a year.
Smith's numbers could be a bit off. Equilar, an executive compensation research firm, calculates that Duke earned just south of $20 million in 2009 and $28 million in 2008, not counting millions of dollars in potential performance awards. But the alderman argued that there's still a "sad" contrast between Duke's compensation and the wages of his employees.
"How can you go to bed at night and sleep knowing you make this kind of money and the people working for you can hardly buy a package of beans and rice?" he asked in an interview with ABCNews.com...
