U.S. court approves warrantless searches of cell phones

(Reuters) - U.S. police can search a cell phone for its number without having a warrant, according to a federal appeals court ruling.

Officers in Indiana found a number of cell phones at the scene of a drug bust, and searched each phone for its telephone number. Having the numbers allowed the government to subpoena the owners' call histories, linking them to the drug-selling scheme.

One of the suspects, Abel Flores-Lopez, who was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison, argued on appeal that the police had no right to search the phone's contents without a warrant.

The U.S. Court of Appeal for the 7th Circuit rejected that argument on Wednesday, finding that the invasion of privacy was so slight that the police's actions did not violate the Fourth Amendment's ban on unreasonable searches...[Full Article]

The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily armed bank robbers and officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the North Hollywood district of Los Angeles on February 28, 1997. Both perpetrators were killed, eleven police officers and seven civilians were injured, and numerous vehicles and other property were damaged or destroyed by the nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition fired by the perpetrators and the police.
At approximately 9:30 am (UTC-8), Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu entered and robbed the North Hollywood Bank of America branch. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu were confronted by dozens of LAPD officers when they exited the bank and a shootout between the officers and robbers ensued. The two robbers attempted to flee the scene, Phillips on foot and Mătăsăreanu in their getaway vehicle, while continuing to engage the officers. The shootout continued onto a residential street adjacent to the bank until Phillips was mortally wounded, including by a self-inflicted gunshot wound; Mătăsăreanu was killed by officers three blocks away. In addition to the two perpetrators, eleven officers and seven civilians sustained injuries. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu had robbed several armored vehicles prior to their attempt in North Hollywood and were notorious for their heavy armament, which included automatic rifles.
Local patrol officers at the time were typically armed with 9 mm or .38 Special pistols on their person, with some having a 12-gauge shotgun available in their cars. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu carried fully automatic rifles, with ammunition capable of penetrating police body armor, and wore military grade body armor of their own. Since the police handguns could not penetrate the bank robbers' body armor, the patrol officers' efforts were ineffective. SWAT eventually arrived with weapons that could penetrate and several officers also appropriated AR-15 rifles from a nearby firearms dealer. The incident sparked debate on the appropriate firepower for patrol officers to have available in similar situations in the future. Due to the large number of casualties, rounds fired, weapons used and overall length of the shootout, it is regarded as the longest and bloodiest event in US police history.

Botched L.A bank heist turns into bloody shootout

LOS ANGELES CNN A blaze of automatic gunfire ripped through a crowded neighborhood after several heavilyarmed gunmen dressed like commandos botched a bank robbery.

Two suspects were killed, and 15 people were injured, including 10 policemen. None of the injuries incurred during the hourlong shootout was life threatening, Los Angeles Police Chief Willie Williams said.

Initially outgunned, police responded to a scene in North Hollywood that resembled a combat zone. Bullets were flying from all directions into cars and buildings and bystanders, too.

More than 200 police were on hand for the siege, which lasted more than an hour. Armored personnel carriers and dozens of police cars, fire engines and ambulances were called to subdue the attackers and attend to the wounded.

Wearing body armor and carrying a trunk full of weapons, the robbers were ready for a fight. And thats exactly what they delivered, firing multiple hundreds of rounds, according to police.

They fired armorpiercing bullets at anything that moved, and one suspect used a getaway car as a shield. Two suspects fought fiercely to the death, killed by helmeted police who fired bullets to the head at close range.

Police Cmdr. Tim McBride said hed seen nothing like it since the Symbionese Liberation Army opened fire on LAPD officers in 1974, three months after members kidnapped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst.

One of the wounded officers was in serious condition, Williams said. Five have been treated and released from a hospital. One officer and one civilian were injured in a related car wreck.

Of the two suspects killed by police, one died of multiple gunshot wounds after he was captured. Police made several arrests in connection with the shooting, but the two dead gunmen are the only suspects known to be involved in the robbery attempt, Williams said.

The L.A. police chief, however, could not confirm that all of the suspects had been captured or accounted for.

After the shooting subsided, squads of helmeted police cordoned off entire blocks searching for suspects. Later Williams said Were know of no other suspects. Were not actively looking for anybody.

He added that police were combing through the crime scene to ensure it is safe for detectives.

At one home, police wrecked a shed with a battering ram attached to an armored personnel carrier hoping to find a suspect, but to no avail.

Report: London no safer for all its CCTV cameras

Doctors call for HPV shots for boys
Pediatricians affirm safety

Despite lackluster acceptance among girls for a vaccine to prevent cancer-causing sexually transmitted viruses, the American Academy of Pediatrics is fully recommending that boys get the shots as well.

Boys 11 and 12 should be immunized routinely, with three doses of a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV), the AAP said Monday in its online issue of Pediatrics. This formally updates the academy’s previous policy of “permissive recommendation” for vaccination of males.

The AAP has recommended since 2007 that girls ages 11 and 12 receive the HPV vaccine.

The new policy should end any resistance among health insurers to covering HPV vaccines for boys. Each HPV shot cost about $130 in July; three shots are needed for the vaccine to be fully effective.

Merck & Co.’s Gardasil is the only approved HPV vaccine for males; both Gardasil and Cervarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, are approved for females.

The HPV vaccine exploded into a presidential political issue last year when Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the race.

In 2007, when the first HPV vaccine was approved for girls ages 11 and 12, Mr. Perry issued an executive order mandating it for Texas girls. An outcry ensued over the usurping of parental rights and the idea that the vaccine gave tacit permission for children and teens to engage in premarital sex.

The Texas Legislature quickly overturned the order, and as a presidential candidate, Mr. Perry called it “a mistake” he regretted because he didn’t discuss it “with the people of the state of Texas.”

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota also hit a buzz saw of controversy when she said that the HPV vaccine “can have very serious side effects,” and that a mother had told her that her daughter had become mentally damaged after receiving the HPV vaccine.

The AAP quickly said there was “absolutely no scientific validity” to the claim that the vaccine “is dangerous and can cause mental retardation.”

As for safety, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program says that as of early February, a total of nine claims have been filed for HPV-vaccine-related deaths and 163 claims filed for injuries. Bin Laden Death Coverup Continues: Compound Demolished

The compound in& Abbottabad, Pakistan, which authorities claim was Osama Bin Laden's home for several years before his supposed killing by a US special forces team last May, has this weekend been totally demolished. Pakistani authorities began tearing down the house on Saturday night, working under floodlights, with the local population subject to a strict curfew and Pakistan Army soldiers and police personnel reportedly deployed in large numbers.

The high security surrounding the building since last May, coupled with its sudden and secretive demolition, have naturally led to suspicions that this weekend marked the successful completion of a brazen coverup -- journalists have never been allowed to enter the building, and were banned from going anywhere near it very soon after Bin Laden's supposed killing.

The total destruction of the death scene makes it much less likely independent verification of the official narrative will ever be established, though considering that no evidence proving Bin Laden was actually killed in the compound has ever been provided by the authorities, this weekend's events are hardly surprising.

Arrested dad wants answers after daughter draws gun pic

OTTAWA - Jessie Sansone and his family are reeling after he was arrested and strip searched by police after his four-year-old daughter drew a picture of a man with a gun in her Kitchener, Ont., kindergarten class.

The 26-year-old father of four said Saturday the sketch was supposed to be him, getting the bad guys and monsters.

The school must have thought differently, as after Nevaeh drew it Wednesday, the school contacted Family and Children's Services and they called police.

KITCHENER — A Kitchener father is upset that police arrested him at his children's' school Wednesday, hauled him down to the station and strip-searched him, all because his four-year-old daughter drew a picture of a gun at school.

"I'm picking up my kids and then, next thing you know, I'm locked up," Jessie Sansone, 26, said Thursday.

"I was in shock. This is completely insane. My daughter drew a gun on a piece of paper at school."

Of course there were a lot of things that were not great about America back in 1950, and there are many things that many of us dearly love that we would have to give up in order to go back and live during that time. Instead of being able to go online and read the articles that you want to read, your news would have been almost entirely controlled by the big media companies of the day. So there are definitely some advantages that we have today that they did not have back in 1950. But not all of the changes have been for the better. Mother angry after daughter vaccinated without her permission

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Sighle Kinney is fuming after her 14-year-old daughter was given four shots by the school nurse at Marcus Garvey Academy without her permission.

The daughter says she was called out of class by the school nurse back on January 30th and sent to the school’s clinic, which is operated by St. John’s medical.

While there she was given four vaccinations, including the one for HPV. It was the shot for HPV really touched a nerve.

Sighle was furious. She says she never gave consent for the shots to the school or St. John’s – Sighle says she even signed a document indicating never to administer medical treatment to her daughter.

“I told them – if she falls, give her a Band Aid, or if she has a headache, give her an aspirin – that’s it,” she says”

A week after getting the shots Sighle’s 14 year-old daughter came down with a rash on her arms that spread to the rest of her body.

Bottom line, Sighle says someone needs to be held accountable.

“I’m angry with everybody. You know, St. John’s should have better nurses… How are you going to overlook something like this – you injected my child with medicine I never wanted her to have,” she says.

An L.A. Times report which characterizes the Sovereign Citizen movement as “a major threat” on a par with Islamic extremism infers that “more than 100,00 Americans” are domestic terrorists as a result of their affiliation with the group.

The article, entitled ‘Sovereign citizen’ movement now on FBI’s radar, frames the belief that “the U.S. is essentially under martial law,” along with support for reintroducing the gold standard, as political views indicative of violent extremism.

The report quotes Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, who in one fell swoop demonizes “more than 100,00 Americans” as domestic terrorists.

“This is a movement that has absolutely exploded,” said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery, Ala., that tracks domestic terrorists and hate groups. More than 100,000 Americans have aligned themselves with the sovereign citizens, the center said.

Potok specializes in seizing upon tragedies to push his organization’s political agenda. Immediately after the shooting of US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Potok took to the airwaves to blame the attempted assassination on the “radical right,” when the shooter, Jared Loughner, was described by those who knew him as a “left-wing pothead”.

Potok has been described as “the Boy Who Cried Right-Wing Terrorist” because of his obsession with exploiting almost every act of violence to impugn conservatives.

“The fact that he is consistently wrong about, well, just about everything — from the political views of the supposed right wingers to the supposedly violent nature of conservative groups to the mere presence of violent crime — does not seem to dissuade Old Media from using him to smear conservatives,” explains Lachlan Markay.

The SPLC makes tens of millions of dollars every year demonizing politically active Americans as domestic terrorists, making it the most profitable “civil rights charity” in America, and yet the establishment media continues to treat the organization and its mouthpieces like Potok as impartial observers.

Of course, any political group with such a substantial membership is bound to contain a smattering of crazies – the report claims members of the Sovereign Citizen movement have killed six police officers over the course of the last 12 years – but to demonize over 100,000 Americans as violent terrorists on a par with Al-Qaeda because they express concerns about the militarization of law enforcement is clearly asinine.

Unfortunately, it’s now par for the course.

Despite the fact that the federal government was forced to back down on framing Ron Paul supporters, libertarians, people who display bumper stickers, people who own gold, or even people who fly a U.S. flag, as terrorists under the infamous MIAC report, the rush to denounce legitimate political beliefs as thought crimes, or even mundane behaviors, by insinuating they are shared by terrorists, has accelerated in recent months.

Under the FBI’s Communities Against Terrorism program, the bulk purchase of food is labeled as a potential indication of terrorist activity, as is using cash to pay for a cup of coffee, and showing an interest in web privacy when using the Internet in a public place.

As we have documented on numerous occasions, the federal government routinely characterizes mundane behavior as extremist activity or a potential indicator of terrorist intent. As part of its ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign, the Department of Homeland Security educates the public that generic activities performed by millions of people every day, including using a video camera, talking to police officers, wearing hoodies, driving vans, writing on a piece of paper, and using a cell phone recording application,” are all potential signs of terrorist activity.

In another development regarding the Kershaw County police state situation, it appears that the mayor of Elgin, a small city located inside Kershaw County, is now endorsing the round-the-clock DUI checkpoints initiated by the Sheriff’s Department.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, Kershaw County in South Carolina first made the news after the Sheriff put all his officers on high alert when a local activist, Jeff Mattox, “Liked” an article on Facebook.

The Sheriff insinuated that the group of activists Mattox belonged to were essentially domestic extremists who wanted to kill police.

Although the Sheriff’s Department received large amounts of bad publicity regarding the ridiculous response by the Sheriff, it did not stop him from implementing a policy of round-the-clock checkpoints located all over the county.

Gas Prices Rising Along with the Bulls**t Meter

The price of one gallon of gas is skyrocketing faster than I have seen for a VERY long time. I live in Southern California and have watched the price jump up more than $0.21 in less than 48 hours! Should people be concerned? Absolutely. But here’s what I think is more concerning:

“Basics, it’s supply and demand, and unfortunately that means rising prices,” said Jeffery Nugent, a professor of economics at USC.

Nugent said there simply aren’t enough refineries producing gasoline in the U.S.

“There are some refineries that are closing down, and it seems that it’s not a very profitable business,” he said.

H5N1 Bird Flu Effects Downplayed as WHO Calls for Weaponized Strain to Go Public

A new study was released that shows the United Nation’s prediction that the H5N1 bird flu kills nearly 60% of infected people may be overblown and this type of flu may only have a 1% death rate.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) counted 586 cases of H5N1 bird flu, and 346 people died. But WHO may have failed to consider millions of people who contracted the H5N1 flu with only mild symptoms.

The news comes just as debates continue over the controversial release of weaponized H5N1 bird flu blueprints that would potentially spawn a bioterrorism pandemic.

The study was released just as the United Nations WHO announced its support of publishing papers on controversial experiments of more contagious laboratory created forms of H5N1.

‘Lunch-In’ Protests Crackdown on Homemade Lunches

The National Center for Public Policy Research hosted a “lunch-in” today at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. The target of the protest? “[F]ederal school nutrition guidelines that allegedly forced at least one student to forgo her mother’s home-packed lunch in favor of chicken nuggets,” a press release announcing today’s event read.

The alleged lunch incident happened in North Carolina. “A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because the school told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious,” a local reporter wrote last week. “The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.”

The story quickly became national news, causing outrage from those who say the government is waging war on lunch.

“We just sat down and had a nice lunch,” protest organizer David Almasi says of today’s protest. “It was our way of thumbing our nose at the federal regulators.”

Hundreds of churches are to have “voice of God” alarms fitted to their roofs deter thieves from stripping off lead and copper.

Minister praises plan to heat swimming pool from fires of crematorium

A money-saving plan to heat a swimming pool with energy from the cremation of dead bodies has been backed by a senior Government minister.

Sir George Young, leader of the House of Commons, said the proposal to warm a Worcestershire leisure centre with heat from a nearby crematorium was a “groundbreaking scheme”.

He said the Government is considering whether the plan could be duplicated elsewhere in Britain.

“The Government is aware of this particular scheme,” he said. “The Department for Energy and Climate Change will shortly be publishing its heat strategy and this will explore the potential for better recovery and reuse of wasted heat in schemes such as this one.”

He added that he would “die a happier man” if he knew heat from his cremation was warming the waters of a local pool.

Redditch Borough Council will be the first authority in the country to use a crematorium to heat a swimming pool. Work has already begun on the project, which is expected to be completed this spring. Danielle Maudsley was flung to the ground in September last year after Trooper Daniel Cole fired his stun gun at her as she attempting to flee arrest. She was still wearing handcuffs as she made the escape bid.

Footage of the incident, which happened outside a Florida Highway Patrol Station, show Trooper Cole firing the weapon despite only being an arms distance away. The video was recorded by a camera in nearby police car.

As the electric prongs struck the young woman, her body tensed, spun around and smacked the ground, her head hitting the asphalt hard.

Moments later she held her hands to her bleeding head and was heard crying before police instructed her to “lie down”. After the footage ended she is said to have blacked out and remained unconscious ever since.
